Head Lice Epidemic!

April 11, 2019

Hi Mystic Moments, there is lice in my child's school. Can aromatherapy be used as a deterrent to stop my child from getting lice from the other children?

 Tim Edwards.

Hi Tim, thanks for getting in touch. Head lice have and always will be an unwelcome house guest that can cause a great deal of stress and discomfort. Any parent would like to be able to prevent an infestation from entering their home, and it turns out that it may be as easy as pie. With school back in session, many parents are rightly worried about lice, since it can run rampant through a classroom. Fortunately, several essential oils repel lice.

Top 3 essential oils for head lice!

Tea Tree

Tea tree oil's effectiveness for the removal of lice is promising. This essential oil contains two constituents which have insecticidal activity and have proven to kill lice and nits. It is also antibacterial and anti-fungal.

Lavender French

Lavender oil is another useful and safe essential oil used to treat head lice, a variety of insects, and even fungi, but it does not kill nits. Lavender oil has proven to be a terrific deterrent against getting lice in the first place.

Eucalyptus Blue Gum

The main component of eucalyptus oil is eucalyptol, a key ingredient in many antiseptic bottles of mouthwash. It works as an insect repellent against head lice. However, it is recommended not to use it with children younger than 5.

Tea tree oil is terrific at repelling lice, but it isn’t the most fabulous smelling. Mixing it with other lice repellent oils help it to smell nice while also being very effective for keeping head lice away.

Preventative Lice Spray

This preventative spray has a pleasant smell, mainly thanks to the inclusion of Lavender. It’s best to be sprayed on in the mornings before school, on both the scalp and the length of the hair as well. This recipe is suitable for children 5 and up. For younger preschoolers, remove the eucalyptus oil from the recipe.

50ml spray bottle, filled halfway with water (best to use distilled water).

Add the following essential oils.

10 drops Tea Tree oil

10 drops Lavender French oil

5 drops Eucalyptus Blue Gum oil

After adding the oils, fill the rest of the bottle with either witch hazel (helps to keep the oils mixed with the water better, and works as a natural preservative) or water.

Always shake well before use.

Too little, not too late.

If a head lice infestation has already taken place, you can use a carrier oil like Olive oil (97%) and your choice of essential oils (3%). If for the use of a child under the age of 5, don't use Eucalyptus.

1. Dampen hair and massage the blend into the scalp and hair and leave in overnight. (Put a towel on the pillow, to prevent oil from getting everywhere.)

2. Shampoo the mixture out the following morning.

3. Final step is to comb the hair with a lice comb to remove the dead lice. Repeat again in three days to get any nits that you may have missed.
