DIY Vegan Acne Face Cream

January 17, 2019

Hi Mystic Moments, I'm looking for a Face Cream Recipe, that is 100% Vegan. My skin can get a bit spotty at times, so any essential oils to combat that could be nice.

 Penny, 23 from Winchester.

Hi Penny, Mystic Moments have all the ingredients readily available to make the perfect Vegan Face Cream. My recipe is rather simple, but I'm sure it will be effective. It will be made up of three sections, Carrier Oil, Wax and Butter. Then you have the additional essential oils and a bit of Vitamin E and Phenoxyethanol for preservation.

Please don't despair if your cream doesn't turn out how you wanted it. Is it too hard? Melt it again and add more carrier oil. On the opposite side of the spectrum, if your moisturiser turns out too soft, melt it again and add more Wax.Penny, I'll now run you through the Carrier oils, Butter and Wax I'll be using for my recipe!

Carrier Oils

There are plenty of carrier oils to choose from, and they all have lovely attributes. You don't have to use my chosen oils; it is entirely up to you. But the oils I have chosen are highly, and the majority are considered as dry oils which won't leave your skin feeling greasy.

Almond Sweet - It is rich in proteins and Vitamin D, and is considered extremely nourishing and is known to soften skin and rejuvenate dead cells.

Avocado Refined - Avocado contains Vitamins A, B1, B2, D, E, and Beta carotene. It is packed full of antioxidants and moisturises dry skin.

Borage - A fantastic source for Linolenic Acid, Vitamins, Minerals and Essential Fatty Acids.

Rosehip - The oil contains Linoleic Acid in abundance, due to which it is the most effective in healing pimples and acne scars.

Candelilla Wax

Candelilla is a plant-based wax and provides Beeswax with some healthy competition and is also a fantastic vegan alternative. It makes for an excellent DIY skincare ingredient in its own right. Like beeswax, this unique wax acts as a stabiliser and emulsifier in cosmetic products. It is skin conditioning, quickly absorbed, odourless, and packed full of nutrients.

Candelilla wax is a bit denser than beeswax, so you will have to adjust your DIY skincare recipes if you are substituting it for beeswax. Use approximately half as much candelilla wax as beeswax since it has twice the stiffening powers.

Shea Butter Unrefined

Most butter will be solid at room temperature and in my eyes are crucial in the recipe. Not only is butter packed full of nutritional goodness, but it will also add a nice creaminess to the moisturiser.

Shea Butter Unrefined is hailed for its healing, protecting and moisturising properties. Rich in cinnamon acid, it reputedly protects the skin from UV rays and therefore is often included in skin care products for after sun care. The first choice in natural skin care and beautiful body care products, this butter forms a breathable, water-resistant film and is the leading natural product for moisturising.

Essential Oils

I'll be using the following essential oils in the Face Cream:

Lavender French - Lavender oil has significant benefits on your skin because of its antimicrobial and antioxidant qualities. It soothes and feeds the skin — treating acne, healing dry skin, and reducing the visibility of dark spots and scars caused by acne. Additional lavender oil benefits include its ability to reduce stress and anxiety that are associated with acne breakouts in adults and its therapeutic characteristics that enhance your quality of sleep, thereby promoting healthy and glowing skin.

Rose Geranium - Used by the Egyptians for developing rich and radiant skin, geranium oil is now used to treat acne and reduce inflammation. This wonderful oil is exceptional for the skin, helping to revitalise cells, as well as rejuvenating dry, lifeless skin. It contains antiseptic, astringent and anti-inflammatory attributes and because it bears cicatrisant (skin healing) properties, it can help fade those scars and other blemishes on the skin over time. It works by boosting blood circulation right below the skin surfaces to help treat spots caused by cuts, wounds, acne, surgical incisions or irritations. Research suggests Geranium oil may be one of the best oils for a handful of dermatological problems, such as oily or congested skin, eczema, and dermatitis.

Tea Tree - This oil comes from an Australian plant and is a genuine super essential oil. It is also known as Melaleuca and has been extensively used in our country for at least a century. Tea Tree has been documented in many studies to combat a broad spectrum of viruses, fungi and bacteria strains. One of its most frequent uses today is in skin care products as it’s one of the best natural cures available for treating acne and acne scarring and even has the potential to heal psoriasis and eczema. It also comes without any adverse side effects that are experienced with other remedies, such as red or peeling skin.

My Vegan Acne Face Cream Recipe

The following recipe should make you around 250g:

65g Shea Butter Unrefined

40g Rosehip

40g Borage

40g Avocado

40g Almond

15g Candelilla Wax

2.5g Vitamin E

2.5g Phenoxyethanol

2g Lavender French

2g Rose Geranium

1g Tea Tree

Method

Step 1

I’ll initially melt the Candelilla Wax and Shea Butter Unrefined in the microwave as they have the highest melting points; alternatively, you could use a double boiler.

Step 2

Once melted, allow to cool for a minute or so before you add in your Carrier Oils. Now add in the Vitamin E and Phenoxyethanol and mix it all. Now you have to allow it to cool; I personally prefer putting it in the fridge as it speeds up the process.

Step 3

Once it has sufficiently cooled and begun to set add in your essential oils. Then start to whisk it, to add air into the mixture and cream it up. Keep doing this in 20-minute intervals until the mixture pales in colour and you get the required consistency. All you have to do then is scoop it into an airtight container of your choice. Store in a cool and dry place.
