The History of Lemon
Lemon Essential Oil has earned the nickname 'Liquid Sunshine' due to its yellow colour, refreshing scent, and the burst of energy that it provides, Lemon Oil possibly has the most potent anti-microbial activity of all the essential oils. Lemon trees are known to be a cross between Bitter Orange and Citron. They were initially grown for decorative purposes with the fruit remaining on the tree. This didn't last for long once the fruit's resourcefulness was discovered; it then began to be cultivated.
Lemon trees are native to Asia. They were used by ancient Indians, Egyptians and Romans to treat diseases. Lemon trees were then brought to Europe in the Middle Ages around 200 A.D. They eventually made their journey from the Middle East to North Africa. Christopher Columbus then introduced them to America. During this time it was widely used by English sailors in the Royal Navy to protect themselves against scurvy and vitamin deficiencies. This was due to their invaluable anti-septic and anti-bacterial properties.
The lemon fruit and essential oil have been applied in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years to treat a broad range of health problems. Lemon Essential Oil is used today in the perfumery and culinary industries. Lemon Oil is also frequently diffused in workplaces to increase employee focus and performance.
