Hi Mystic Moments, the family and I are going camping next month so I was wondering, what would be the best essential oils to take along?
David | 36 | Havant
Well David, you have come to the right place. Down my neck of the woods, I give Bear Grylls a run for his money. A lot of people prioritise a tent, stove, warm clothing etc. which is entirely wrong; essential oils should be at the top of any list. Okay, maybe a tent is more important, and possibly warm clothes but my point is, essential oils can make a painful camping trip a pleasurable one, and this is how. I have five super essential oils for you David that will repel insects, soothe bites and improve all round sleep. As much as I love the great outdoors, let's face it, it's not the most comfortable experience.
Camping Top 5!
I warn you David; it has an interesting scent. It's like marmite, you either love it or hate it. I for one hate it, but I tell you what I do love, how amazing it is at repelling mosquitoes! In life you are faced with choices, for me, having this scent around was a lot better than a swarm of mosquitoes!
I love the smell of Geranium, and it is also a super all round insect repellent. Geranium is known to repel horse flies and ticks. Ticks are (gross) heavily present in certain places and can pass on serious diseases, so don't leave Geranium at home. Combine this with the Citronella to repel the entire insect kingdom!
Lavender is an excellent oil for bites. If you get a mosquito bite, apply some lavender oil, and the inflammation should reduce in less than 24 hours! As I said previously, camping isn't the most comfortable and some struggle to sleep. Lavender oil is world renowned for inducing relaxation and sleep.
If your campsite is swarming with ants (unlucky), don't despair, Peppermint is here! This oil is perfect for steering away bands of marching ants. It is also a fabulous oil for sore muscles, so if your camping experience includes a lot of walking, it is a must-have.
Let's take a trip down memory lane, and talk about Mosquitoes once again. One oil they absolutely hate is Tea Tree, and most people hate them so don't forget to bring it along! Tea Tree oil is commonly diluted with a carrier oil and put on the skin to act as an all day repellent. This essential oil is also one of the best antiseptic remedies to have around for superficial skin wounds.
Using Essential Oils!
When camping there are several ways to use essential oils, but here are the ones I would recommend. Applying them to the skin, placing a few drops around your campsite or using diffusers.
When using on the skin, please remember to dilute them first with a carrier oil. Essential oils are incredibly potent (well ours are anyway) so to prevent any adverse skin reactions make sure they are diluted. Conventional carrier oils used are Almond Sweet, Coconut and Jojoba. Once diluted you can apply to wounds, bites or generally apply on your skin to repel insects. In general it is 97% carrier to 3% essential oil.
Dropping a few drops around your campsite can also be equally as effective. Especially around areas in which you are eating or around your tent itself to prevent little critters from getting in during the middle of the night. Trust me; nobody wants to wake up next to an array of insects.
If you don't want to apply any oil to your skin, luckily we have diffuser jewellery as an alternative. You simply put a few drops of your chosen oil on the felt pads provided and then put this inside of the pendant. We have two options when it comes to this, necklaces and bracelets.
We also have a ready-made blend available called 'Bug Repellent'. This essential oil blend was designed to tackle annoying pests. It has been tailor-made to repel mosquitoes, fleas and ticks but would most definitely be effective against other creepy crawlies too. Just add a few drops to a moisturiser, or dilute in water to use in a spray bottle or diffuser and say adios to bugs.
Ingredients: Citronella (Cymbopogon Winterianus), Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus Globulus), Lemongrass (Cymbopogon Flexuosus), Rose Geranium (Pelagonium Roseum) and Thyme (Thymus Vulgaris).
