Hello Emily, I have also personally suffered from nausea, so I know exactly how you feel. It can be extremely unpleasant at times, and it can sometimes feel like it is never going to end. For those who don't know, nausea can be defined as a feeling of sickness, with an inclination to vomit. The causes can also be so varied, sometimes it can be caused by the flu, other times stress or travel, and in rare cases, an unrelenting wave of nausea can literally come out of nowhere.

As you have already mentioned Emily, essential oils can certainly be a help in hand. They are classed as powerful natural remedies and still to this date, have never let me down. These are the top 5 oils I have used to deal with nausea, abling me to carry on my daily responsibilities and put a smile back on my face.

Top 5 Essential Oils

Chamomile Roman - Chamomile has been used since ancient times for digestive complaints and is still readily used today. It has been deemed to be highly effective against an upset stomach, diarrhoea, anxiety and insomnia. It has been known to soothe the gut and the mind due to its excellent relaxation properties, making it an incredible choice for nausea.

Ginger - For me, Ginger is up there with the most effective oil. Ginger is famous for its ability to settle an upset stomach, diarrhoea, nausea, motion sickness, and more. Ginger oil is a natural anti-inflammatory and is used by many to relieve digestive issues.

Lavender French - There isn't a lot that Lavender can't do. The versatility of this oil makes it incredibly popular; not only does it smell delightful; it has an abundant ability to help calm an upset stomach. If you are feeling nauseous due to stress or anxiety, the relaxing properties of Lavender make it a perfect fit to help you out.

Lemon Cold Pressed - This refreshing citrus aroma is a lot more than just a delicious scent. It can be a significant contributor to healthier skin, and some also believe that it can aid in digestion. Lemon essential oil is packed full of various antispasmodic properties, which means that it's an excellent option for people experiencing painful stomach cramps, which can eventually lead to nausea.

Peppermint Premium - The fact that Peppermint oil has been used for centuries to help with the management of nausea is a clear indication of how effective it can be. Peppermint is a powerful anti-inflammatory and has been to known to settle an upset stomach, improve digestion and reduce inflammation and spasms within the gut and digestive tract.

Using Essential Oils

Diffusers - The best way to administer essential oils to someone that is feeling nauseous is by using a diffuser. A diffuser will release essential oils into the air and allow those present in the room to inhale its millions of micro-particles. This is undoubtedly one of the easier methods to experience the benefits of essential oils and their therapeutic properties.

Steam Inhalation - Another great method to consider is steam inhalation, which is also pretty simple. To start the proceedings, all you need is a hot bowl of water. Now add 3 drops of your chosen essential oil to the bowl. Now dip a flannel or hand towel into the bowl, wring it out and immediately place over your mouth and nose.

Applied Topically - As essential oils can be incredibly potent, it is imperative to dilute them first using an appropriate carrier oil. Carrier oils I tend to use include, Almond Sweet, Apricot Kernel, Coconut and Jojoba American. Make sure that the essential oil content makes up at most 3% of the mixture to avoid any potential skin irritations. Once you have done this, you are free to massage the mixture to the areas of your choosing. I tend to rub my temples and the back of my neck.

Most essential oils should be safe for use by the majority of people, but some may suffer from allergic reactions, in this case, please don't use it again. Always check with your doctor before using essential oils, if you have any ongoing health conditions or already taking medication. If pregnant or breastfeeding, it would be wise to consult your doctor before using essential oils. It is also crucial to speak to a doctor before allowing children to use them.
