The Gruesome Twosome - Stress & Anxiety

Hi Mystic Moments, what's good for Stress and Anxiety?

Kristin | 23 | South Carolina

Thanks for getting in touch Kristin. When it comes to stress and anxiety, essential oils have proven to be very effective. I will also list a couple of ideas that that are proven to lower your overall stress levels. Hopefully, after following a few of my tips, your anxiety and stress levels will start to decrease. Please don't be afraid to go to your local Doctors if your anxiety levels are beginning to affect your day to day life, be open about that and express how you feel. What a lot of people don't realise is that your mental health is equally important as your physical health.

What is stressing you out?

Some stress is good for us; it adds clarity and motivation to our everyday lives. The problem is when the level of stress in your life builds up, causing you to turn a blind eye to things that are harming or distressing you continually, this is when you take the risk of becoming too stressed.

Is it work?

Work, work, work, work, work. In the famous words of Rhianna, all you do and think about is work, non-stop. Whether it's because you're so desperate to climb the ladder or investing countless numbers of hours into your own business, anything that soaks up 100% of your life will slowly break you down. Without a bit of relaxation, you can risk yourself being left passionless, frustrated, and unfulfilled.

Is it lack of sleep?

Your body is a temple, and yet yours is breaking down. You may be experiencing constant body tension, including headaches, neck aches, backaches, and general soreness. Maybe you feel as if you have way too much on your plate with no possible end in sight. In turn, this could affect your sleep, with you waking up feeling less rested rather than refreshed. Insomnia has become an everyday occurrence.

Is it your eating habits?

Your eating pattern is erratic, either too much or too little. Or, you are choosing unhealthy food options, and possibly you're not drinking enough water. Maybe this is the cause of noticeable changes in your mood. You're often irritable, short-tempered, and perhaps unable to focus on completing tasks. Trivial things set you off quickly, and you really can't remember the last time you had a good laugh.

Just Relax

Once you accept that change in your life is inevitable, you will be one step closer to being able to relax. Once you've identified your stress triggers, only then you can focus on adding a little bit more calm into your routine.

The keys to being stress and anxiety free!

Be Realistic

Finally, accept that you need a substantial amount of sleep. I can't stress enough the importance of sleep; your mind continues learning in ways that are not plausible during waking hours. Without sleep, your body cannot restore and refresh itself, which is vital in everyday life. Although everyone is different and some people may be able to thrive on four hours of sleep, these are rare exceptions and not the majority. Most people need between six to eight hours sleep for full restoration.

When it comes to general work, try to stay realistic. Having an unrealistic interpretation of "hard work" will end up exhausting you down. Hard work is giving your tasks the complete attention they deserve at the time, not letting it bleed into all hours of your day and work you into the ground.

Give yourself set blocks of time in where you make sure to relax and make sure you certainly don't skip it. If at work, make sure you take your breaks and lunch and give yourself time to reflect on today's events. If you're at home, let everyone know certain times in which you wish to relax. That way, the whole family will appreciate your wishes and may even decide to join in themselves.

Treat Your Body Like a Temple

Eating well can help your body feel balanced and healthy, making you less susceptible to spikes in blood sugar and feelings of anxiety. Try to reduce the following from your diet:

Avoid the excessive refined sugar found in granola bars, pastries or sodas. These can cause extreme ups and downs in your blood sugar and lead to upsetting your body's ability to utilise energy efficiently.

Avoid excessive caffeine. Too much caffeine can make you jumpy and irritable. Going cold turkey is probably for the best but if you can't, try reducing by a few cups a day and see if you notice a decrease in your anxiety symptoms. Try not to drink caffeine after 1 or 2 in the afternoon, if you must have more coffee than you should, try switching to decaf or a herbal tea with little or no caffeine.

Drink plenty of water. Drinking a cup of water rejuvenates and hydrates your body, supply it with some much-needed energy. If you are suffering from a headache, it works exceptionally well!

Get some of that five-a-day in your system! Fruits, vegetables and whole grains that are free of refined sugar! Eat plenty of low-calorie proteins, such as chicken and fish. These proteins are a super source of energy.

Fresh Air and Exercise

Natural sunlight is the best way to naturally increase your vitamin-D levels, which can decrease symptoms of anxiety disorders and depression. A short 15-minute break will not only take your mind off stress but also let you reap the benefits of outdoor activity. And the greener the better; if you live close to a local forest, go there and take in all the beautiful surroundings. Or if you're stuck in the city, look for parks or quiet tree-lined streets to take a peaceful stroll.

While you're outside, you might as well try to participate in some exercise. Exercise is guaranteed to make you feel better about yourself but will also flood your body with feel-good endorphins. Researchers believe this response can boost your mood, increase relaxation, and alleviate symptoms of anxiety disorders. It also kickstarts the body so if you do wake up feeling groggy and tired; a good morning run can undoubtedly have a positive impact and fill you with copious amounts of energy.

Here are some ideas to try:

Walking, jogging, or running in the park. Get a dog and exercise together. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Go on a forest bike ride. Go swimming in a lake. Water aerobics in the local pool General gardening

Positive Thinking

Adopting a positive mindset is all about making the best of any situation and avoiding all negative thoughts and tendencies. If you're feeling the stress, try picturing a calm and relaxed scene in your mind. Visualisations like this can do wonders to improve your outlook. Use affirmations to change your outlook on life and stop yourself from always jumping to negative conclusions. Positive affirmations are certain phrases which you repeat to yourself which describe how you want to be. The theory is that when you first start saying these statements, they may not be true, but with repetition, they sink into your subconscious mind, and you begin to believe them. Over time they overwrite any limiting or negative beliefs you may have about yourself and replace them with positive thoughts and feelings which instil confidence, hope, ambition and much more.
