Hi Mystic Moments, I am still carrying facial scars from my bout with acne during my teenage years. I desperately want to reduce the scarring on my face as it has given my confidence a big knock. Any help would be appreciated.
Jasper, 21 from Bath.
Hey Jasper, I understand where you’re coming from. Deep down you shouldn’t be worried about what others think. To become truly comfortable in your own skin you need to become self-aware, accept your limitations and start building your own self-worth. Altered mindsets like this don't occur overnight so don't be so hard on yourself. Staying positive and remaining patient is the key to all changes. Rather than filling your head with thoughts of things you wish you had Jasper, you should instead focus on finding beauty in the things you already have. Once you’re able to love yourself, everything else will become second nature.
But you’re only young, and I can sympathise with your situation. You’re at that age where there is a lot more sensitivity around appearance, as well as pressure to ‘look good’. We live in a society which has been engulfed by the social media culture which continually tells people how we should look, act or feel. So, today I will give you a list of both essential and carrier oils that will aid you in your mission to reduce your scarring. Jasper, hopefully the oils work their magic, and you start feeling a lot better within yourself.
Essential Oils to Reduce Scarring
Used by the Egyptians for developing rich and radiant skin, geranium oil is now used to treat acne and reduce inflammation. This wonderful oil is exceptional for the skin, helping to revitalise cells, as well as rejuvenating dry, lifeless skin. It contains antiseptic, astringent and anti-inflammatory attributes and because it bears cicatrisant (skin healing) properties, it can help fade those scars and other blemishes on the skin over time. It works by boosting blood circulation right below the skin surfaces to help treat spots caused by cuts, wounds, acne, surgical incisions or irritations. Research suggests Geranium oil may be one of the best oils for a handful of dermatological problems, such as oily or congested skin, eczema, and dermatitis.
Helichrysum offers strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help counteract ageing of the skin and encourage the regeneration of damaged skin. It also contains antifungal, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties. It’s exceptional for wound healing and is one of the most significant natural remedies for reducing stretch marks. Therefore it is a magnificent oil for treating acne scars and preventing breakouts, due to its potent antimicrobial and antibiotic properties. It operates without drying the skin or causing redness, unlike some harsh chemical acne treatments or medications.
This oil isn’t as well known as others and tends to be somewhat costly, but it’s considerably effective for healing scars. A member of the Asteraceae plant family, it’s home to the Mediterranean region, where it has been employed for its medicinal compounds for thousands of years. It remains highly popular in Mediterranean nations like Italy, Portugal, Spain and Turkey although its reputation has begun to flow throughout the rest of the world.
Lemon essential oil offers all of the properties of lemon juice, which is renowned for its ability to diminish scars. The fact it's high in vitamin C helps to trigger the creation of collagen, which helps maintain firmness in the skin as well as expelling impurities and stimulating the formation of new skin cells. As a natural astringent, it tightens the skin to improve its tone. If you’re battling acne scars, lemon oil is an excellent choice as its antibacterial characteristics also work to eliminate bacteria that can cause acne breakouts, helping to prevent future scarring as well.
Neroli has a beautiful fragrance of citrus and floral aromas, along with astringent and antibacterial properties that make it an extraordinary remedy for lightening scars as well as for acne. It helps to build new skin cells while improving skin elasticity. When used regularly, it can reduce the presence of stretch marks and also heal broken capillaries beneath the skin. Any stress-related skin conditions typically respond well, due to its superior calming and healing abilities. Bacterial skin issues and rashes can be treated too, due to its antimicrobial capabilities.
This oil comes from an Australian plant and is a genuine super essential oil. It is also known as Melaleuca and has been extensively used in our country for at least a century. Tea Tree has been documented in many studies to combat a broad spectrum of viruses, fungi and bacteria strains. One of its most frequent uses today is in skin care products as it’s one of the best natural cures available for treating acne and acne scarring and even has the potential to heal psoriasis and eczema. It also comes without any adverse side effects that are experienced with other remedies, such as red or peeling skin.
Carrier Oils to Reduce Scarring
Coconut oil has been an essential component of healing programs around the world for the majority of history. Due to its saturated nature, it was considered unhealthy at one point. Nothing could be further from the truth; Coconut oil is fantastic! It is now considered a super healthy fat, used in cooking and even taken alone as a supplement.
Coconut is exceptionally nutritive to the skin. It is moisturising, soothing and anti-inflammatory. It is usually present in nearly every skin care formula due to all of its beneficial effects. Coconut oil's fatty acids increase the rate at which wounds heal by stimulating collagen production. It also helps, and these two characteristics aid the body in creating healthy new skin.
Rosehip oil can help clear scars and reduce the presence of stretch marks by promoting skin regeneration. This is due to the essential fatty acids that are present. Super light and non-greasy, it also boasts terrific anti-ageing benefits for your face. The benefit comes from its high antioxidant content and the oil’s ability to infiltrate deeper layers of the skin. This is where it can improve overall moisture levels and reduce the visible signs of ageing. As we get older collagen production naturally slows down, but Rosehip is packed full of Vitamin C and will, therefore, stimulate collagen production in the skin.
Unbelievably powerful, Tamanu oil is also known as the 'oil of the gods'. Tamanu is a relatively obscure oil pressed from the nut of a tropical tree in South East Asia. It has been used for centuries as a cure-all for many skin problems. It is considered remarkably healing, nutritive and anti-inflammatory. It is thought to help detoxify the skin by strengthening the immune system on a cellular level.
These days the uses of Tamanu oil is expansive, including assisting in healing scars, stretch marks, acne scars and anti-aging. It has antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and aids in the regeneration of the skin.
Scar Reducing Recipe
Jasper, here is a simple but quick recipe to hopefully reduce the amount of visible scarring on your face. It is so important to dilute the essential oils in a carrier oil as essential oils are extremely strong.
97% Rosehip Oil
You can then apply this blend to your scars using a cotton bud. I would personally recommend leaving it on for 30 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water. You should do this daily for best results.
Just in case anyone else out there is currently going though a bad bout with acne, we have actually designed a pack that contains five essential oils that are highly effective against acne breakouts. Just remember to always dilute them with a suitable carrier oil before application.
Rosemary French Essential Oil – reduces the excess oil in the skin, making it a good choice for treating acne. It has an anti-inflammatory effect which reduces the redness of the skin caused by acne.
Bergamot Bergaptene Free Essential Oil – has an amazing citrus scent and antibacterial properties which can help with eliminating black spots and blemishes on your skin.
Tea Tree Australian Essential Oil – contains anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, which reduce the inflammation that leads to the swelling caused by bacteria of the skin.
